Directions to WSLC Flume Walk
For Sunday April 20, 2008 at
8:50 AM
Directions: From State Route 108 entering Sonora, take Mono Way off-ramp. Drive east on Mono Way to Tuolumne Road,
which is County Road E-17. This road takes you to Tuolumne City (about 10 miles). This is the
same road to the Black Oak Casino. In Tuolumne City,
continue past the new traffic signal light and make a left turn at the
abandoned Standard gas station (Carter
Street) and drive 0.3 miles to Buchanan
Mine Road. This is where you see the old Volunteer
Fire Department's hose cart house on the right. Make a right turn at the large
open area and follow Buchanan Mine
Road east for 0.5
miles. You will see the Mira Monte residential subdivision on the left. There
will be museum people standing around, waiting.
Park your vehicle safely and lock it.
Check in and sign the museum log book, so we won't forget you when the
hike is over. At this time, we will give you a fluorescent ribbon
to tie to your vehicle radio antenna, so we know that your vehicle belongs to
the museum group. At the end of the hike at the Tuolumne River,
we have volunteers that will drive you back five miles to your vehicle.
There is only one 24-hr self-service gas station and mini-mart (Kwik-serve) in Tuolumne
City. Tuolumne
is a small town (population 1865). There are no restaurants in Tuolumne.
There is the Tuolumne Market, where you may purchase good cold cut
sandwiches and soft drinks.
The
Tuolumne City Memorial
Museum has rest room
facilities after the three hour hike. Be sure to bring a previously made picnic
lunch and drinks. When you drive
through Sonora
at about 8:00 in the morning, the food places will not be open.
Remember, this is open country in the Stanislaus National Forest.
What you pack in, pack out. Take only photos and memories. There is little or
no shade. Bring water, hat, and a camera. We will have two-way Ham Radio communications
with the outside world for safety.
