To
celebrate the beginning of the new organization “TWIST” (The Women’s
Improvement Society of Tuolumne), the following
article was taken from the April 24,
1947 issue of The Tuolumne Prospector. It memorializes the Tuolumne Women’s
Improvement Club, the service organization that was the inspiration for
“TWIST.”
It was announced by Mrs. Frank Carter, president of
the Tuolumne Women’s Improvement Club, that the Bi-County Club will hold its Spring Convention in the club house at Carter
and Bay Sts. here tomorrow, Friday, April 25.
The all day session will be called to order at 10:30 tomorrow morning; there
will be a pot-luck luncheon at 12:30 and the State
Drama Chairman will read a play during the afternoon program, which will also
feature music. Mrs. Carter appointed Edna
Kollberg, vice-president of the local club, as
chairman of the luncheon. The discussion
of the convention was held during the regular monthly
meeting of the Improvement Club last Friday afternoon in the clubhouse.
It was voted to donate $5.00 to the Cancer drive now on. It was announced that the Women’s Society of
Christian Service annual tea will be held in the
clubhouse in the afternoon of May 9.
Permission was granted the Ladies Altar and Aid
Society to hold their regular meetings in the Club rooms the second Tuesday
evening of the month.
Nominating committee named:
Dorothy Kellogg, Wilhelmine Defiebre
and Dora Belle Howard were selected to serve on the
nominating committee and asked to present names of possible officers for the
next year at the May meeting. There was discussion of a dessert bridge for
the June 20 meeting.
Following the adjournment of the meeting, whist was played with prizes being awarded to Mrs. Walter Ray,
Mrs. Kellogg and Mrs. George Handy.
The clubrooms were decorated with
pansies, yellow roses and spirea. The
refreshment committee of Gladys Starkweather,
Jackie Clyma and Elsa Starkweather,
served delicious strawberry shortcake, whipped cream, coffee and tea to all
members and guests.
